UV light has been proven for decades to effectively disinfect air, surfaces and water. The UV light is installed into the Heating and Air Conditioning system generates UV rays that break up the structure of microorganisms such as germs, viruses, bacteria and fungi so as they cannot reproduce. In human beings, skin exposure to germicidal wavelengths of UV light can produce sunburns and (in some cases) skin cancer. Exposure of the eyes to this UV radiation can produce extremely painful inflammation of the cornea and temporary or permanent vision impairment, up to and including blindness in some cases. UV can damage the retina of the eye and touching the lamp immediately after the UV lamp was shut down can create painful burns on the hands and fingers.

There are two basic types of heating and air system thermostats.
Electromechanical thermostats are the older types with metal coils and a mercury tube inside. As the temperature in a room fluctuates, the thermostat coils either contract or expand, moving the mercury to one end or the other end of its tube. This signals the home heating and air conditioning system to either turn on or off. While these are not as accurate as digital models, they are very economical and simple to use. As this type of thermostat uses mercury, which is toxic to the environment, the old mercury thermostats are being slowly being phased out.
Digital thermostats for heating and air conditioning systems are the new control device for the homes and office buildings. Digital thermostats have no moving parts to measure temperature and instead rely on thermistors or other semiconductor devices such as a resistance thermometer (resistance temperature detector). Most non-programmable models provide the same function as the electromechanical thermostats, with the exception that they use digital signals instead of the mercury switch for turning on and off the air system. Other digital thermostats are highly programmable. The programmable digital thermostats allow you to set time, days and temperatures for your system to turn on and off based on your comfort settings. These thermostats are much more accurate at keeping your home of office comfortable and because there is more control, you can significantly save on your energy costs by reducing your heat and cooling during certain days and times when it is not needed.
