The better a dryer vent blows, the less lint builds up in it. Short vents blow better than long ones. Full size dryers blow better than smaller stack dryers or older dryers. Vents with a lot of turns and elbows blow worse and build up more lint. Very short vents attached to full size dryers may never need cleaning! Most vents, however, need cleaning every two to three years, depending on the factors listed above.

A plugged vent will certainly cause a dryer to run hotter and increase the chance that something could catch fire. A dirty vent, however, is only one link in a chain of events that must occur for a fire to start. Other events may include: failure of thermostat and limit switches in the dryer, lint inside the dryer, a missing or damaged lint screen, and a crushed hose behind the dryer. Some of our competitors employ "scare tactics" and reprint newspaper articles about fires caused by dryers. Many fire departments and insurance companies do require that dryer vents be inspected and cleaned regularly.

    Reasons for inspection and cleaning:

    1. Increased drying time? (jeans & towels)
    2. Is the dryer operating hotter than normal?
    3. Reduces chance of dryer vent fire. When the dryer is used, over time lint will collect and adhere to the inside of the dryer vent walls. The larger the buildup, the larger the risk of having a dryer vent fire.
    4. Reduces "wasted electricity" and "appliance stress". Use of a dryer with a dirty vent can cause the dryer to run longer to dry the same amount of clothes because the hot air being expelled cannot freely exit the vent. Longer drying time takes more electricity and puts added stress on the appliance.
    5. Metal connectors from the dryer to the wall are now standard requirements. Use of the "white plastic" types should be replaced due to their ability to melt in a fire.  All connection pieces to the dryer vents should be inspected to make sure they are properly attached and up to the newer building code requirements (max 25' of pipe). Regular maintenance will keep the dryer vent clean and the dryer working properly.

Depending on what type of dryer you have, commercial or residential - the basic procedure is the same.

Our service technician will come inside and unhook the connection piece that goes between the dryer and the vent. We use high pressure air and specialized motorized and manual dryer vent  brushes to clean out the entire hard duct, flexible duct, dryer vent hoses, and the dryer itself. We inspect the hoses and the vent pipe to assure that it is serviceable. Once the cleaning equipment has traveled the length of the vent enough times to thoroughly clean the vent, we'll clean out the connection piece, reattach your cleaned dryer and recheck the vent while your dryer is operating.
